Arnold Christian Harrits

Arnold Christian Harrits was born in 1927 to Marie and Peter Harrits in Racine. He attended Fratt Grade School and Park High School, after which he spent four years in the U.S. Navy.

After his service, he married Shirley Moore in Racine and worked for Borden Dairy. He spent several years owning Harrits Variety in New Holstein before moving to Waukesha. The couple had three boys: John (Sue Carroll), Jim (Kathy Liebherr) and Jeff (Cathy Croci). Arnold worked for Golden Guernsey Dairy and in the afternoons drove school bus for New Berlin Bus Company.

Eventually, he managed the New Berlin terminal for several years and then worked in the office of their Muskego terminal until he retired. He continued to drive school bus until he was 78 years old.

Arnold was involved in Cub Scouts as the Cub Master at Randall School.

He continued his interest in scouting by working with Troop 2 at the First United Methodist Church.

The family was involved in the AFS Program, hosting two exchange sons, Roland Krist from Austria and Thyjs Van der Haar from the Netherlands. As a hobby, Arnie enjoyed restoring old chairs with caning and rush work, providing beautiful furniture for family and friends.

The family enjoyed camping, hiking and fishing up north as well as traveling all over the United States for over 40 years. Internationally, he visited family in Denmark many times, as well as trips to Egypt, Turkey, China, Australia and New Zealand.

He enjoyed traveling and experiencing different cultures.

Arnie is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley; his three sons and their wives; and his four grandchildren, Peter of Minneapolis and Tanzania, Thomas of Santa Monica, Calif., Robert of New York City and Sarah of Dayton, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Inga Harrits; brother and sisters- in-law, Beverly and Tom Rogers, James and Darlene Moore, Barbara Rogers, Robert and Phyllis Moore; and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Denmark.

He was preceded in death by his brother Anders John Harrits and his parents.

Arnie’s family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, April 26, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 300 Carroll St., Waukesha, from 9 AM to 11 AM. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 AM.
