Dixie Lee Barrows

April 7, 1931 – March 26, 2014

Dixie Lee Barrows (nee Ehrman) of Brookfield crocheted her last afghan on March 26, 2014, at the age of 82.

She was the beloved wife of 62 years to Les and proud mother of Kirk, Greg and Debbie (John) Bernhardt. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.

Dixie was born in Topeka, Kan., on April 7, 1931, to George and Florence (nee Burman) Ehrman. She met Les on a blind date in February 1952 while he was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base. They married on October 4 that year. Dixie and Les, and eventually their family, lived at Scott AFB in Illinois, where Kirk was born; Han AFB in Germany, where Greg was born; Toul-Rosières Air Base in France; Warner Robins AFB in Georgia, where Debbie was born; Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay, Labrador, Newfoundland; Scott AFB; Topeka, while Les was in Vietnam; Scott AFB; Fond du Lac, when Les retired from the Air Force; and eventually settling in Brookfield.

Dixie was a lifelong volunteer, always finding somewhere to lend a hand. She helped at Family Help in Goose Bay, was a Brownie leader, assisted at the Methodist churches in Fond du Lac and Waukesha and was a 20-year volunteer at Elmbrook Hospital. Dixie made afghans and quilts for newborns at the hospital and was president of the hospital auxiliary. She enjoyed bridge, bowling and their fluffy cats. Dixie also loved to cross-stitch, crochet and needle point.

A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Dixie’s life will be held at the Becker Ritter Funeral Home, 14075 W. North Ave., Brookfield, on Sunday, March 30, from 2 PM to 4 PM.

Memorials to the Elmbrook Humane Society are appreciated.
