Earl T. Piber

Earl Thomas Piber, age 81 of Oconomowoc, went home to his heavenly father on May 6, 2014, while at Angels-Grace Hospice in Oconomowoc. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Earl was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Milwaukee to Johann and Agnes Piber.

He was a graduate of North Division High School. He proudly served in the United States Army 11th Airborne Division. Earl attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Sharing a love of music, Earl sang his way into Lucille (Lu) Ertl’s heart and they married at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Oconomowoc.

Earl worked as a senior electromechanical engineer for 44 years at Cutler-Hammer (Eaton Corp.) until he retired in 1999. During his tenure, he developed switches for the aerospace and commercial industry and was awarded 80 patents solidifying his achievements and innovations.

In retirement, Earl kept busy volunteering at Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital and was recently hired part-time in their maintenance department.

Throughout his entire life, Earl was a dedicated employee and knew the importance of working hard. Known as “Mr. Fix-It,” Earl could repair practically anything. He was a selfless and kind man who came to the aid of his children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors and community whenever they needed a helping hand.

Earl was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Nashotah and shared his gift of song in the church choir. He was also actively involved in the Oconomowoc Community Choir, Fort Atkinson Men’s Chorus and has graced many with his beautiful voice. Earl was a member of the Oconomowoc Senior Center (Wii Bowling Team), Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed volunteering for many events.

Earl is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lucille, of Oconomowoc; his four children: Ellen (Clint) Mitchell of Oconomowoc, Carolyn (Jeff) Jewell of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nancy (Kurt) Schmidt of Beaver Dam, and Ken (Lona) Piber of Oconomowoc; eight grandchildren: Kurt and Brian Mitchell, William and Elizabeth Jewell, Nicole and Abby Schmidt, and Ethan and Hayden Piber; nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Johann and Agnes Piber; sister, Hani Madritsch; and his cousin, Ray Yank, whom he considered his brother.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 12, 2014, at the Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home, 121 S. Cross St., Oconomowoc, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45 a.m, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 120 Nashotah Road, Nashotah.

The Rev. Michael Strachota will officiate. A private family burial will be held at St. Jerome Cemetery, Oconomowoc.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to the Oconomowoc Senior Center or the Oconomowoc Community Choir.
