Marilyn P. Ruther

Marilyn P. Ruther of Naples, Fla., went to heaven peacefully on May 12, 2014, surrounded by her children.

Born in Omaha, Neb., to Raymond G. Peterson and Marjorie Hudson Peterson, she was one of four children.

On July 4, 1953, she married Rex B. Ruther in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This union was blessed by three children, Kristine Kae Ruther of Naples, Rexanne (Mike) Prom of Windsor, Colo., and Peter B. (Sue) Ruther of Loganville, Ga.

Marilyn was a graduate of the University of Iowa, a sister of the Pi Beta Phi sorority and a proud member of the famed Scottish Highlanders.

She enjoyed many activities and hobbies. In Wisconsin, she devoted many hours to the Waukesha Service Club. A dedicated swim club mom, she enjoyed golf and tennis, while acquiring her real estate/brokers license. Upon moving to Atlanta in 1977, she joined the Roswell Garden Club, ALTA, Roswell Historical Society and the Atlanta Botanical Society, all while making an untold number of friends.

In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed the summers in their mountain cabin in Blue Ridge, GA. During the winter months, Naples, FL became their home. Marilyn treasured her time as an active member of the Sandollars Club of Naples. A longtime member of the North Naples United Methodist Church, she particularly enjoyed her active participation in the Body Recall Class.

An avid sports fan, she devoted many cheers to her beloved Iowa Hawkeyes, Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Braves.

A three-time cancer survivor, Marilyn fought it with strength, witty humor and prayer.

In addition to her three children, she is survived by her two sisters, Rozan (Cliff) Mueller of Naples and Karen Kiger of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren, Raymond Kyle, Brittany Kyle and Benjamin W. Ruther; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Rex B. Ruther.

We will miss her and cherish her, as she displayed a motherís love to the end of her life.

A celebration of Marilynís life will be held on Thursday, May 15, at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel at North Naples United Methodist Church, 6000 Goodlette Road N., Naples, FL 34109.
