May 29, 1913 – March 13, 2014
Gladys Anna (nee Kuehn) Almekinder, 100, of Waukesha, joined her husband, Edwin, in heaven on March 13, 2014. She was born May 29, 1913, to Herman and Martha (Schultz) Kuehn in the Town of Milford.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Elaine (Ken) Winn of Wautoma and Marie (Jerry) Carpenter of North Prairie; and son Edward (Patti) Almekinder of Raleigh, N.C. She will also be missed by her nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Gladys is also survived by many nephews and nieces, as well as her sister- in-law Alberta Almekinder.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lester, Herbert and Harold; two sisters, Goldie and Sylvia, and one great-grandson, Andrew Lawrence Carpenter.
Gladys retired from GTE (Verizon) after 15 years. She kept busy in retirement with bowling, playing cards, crocheting and crossword puzzles. She loved to travel, going to Europe, Hawaii, the Bahamas and Alaska, to name a few places.
Gladys also sang for a time with the Sweet Adelines and was a member of the Red Hat Society at Linden Heights in Waukesha, where she lived for a few years before moving to Heartland House in Wautoma. Gladys was happiest visiting her children and grandchildren and her face would light up when a baby was placed in her lap or small children came near.
Services will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, 7301 W. Nash St., Milwaukee, on Friday, May 16, at 1 p.m.
