Lyla B. Elger (nee Olson)
Lyla B. Elger of Waukesha went peacefully to Heaven to waltz with her husband
again on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at the age of 95 years. She was born in
Iola, the daughter of Matt and Hannah (nee Hanson) Olson.
In the 1930s, Lyla worked as a housekeeper/nanny. She met the love of her life,
Percy Elger, and they were married on June 7, 1941. Lyla and her husband owned
and operated Elger’s General Store in New Berlin until 1964. After that, she
worked at Tingles in downtown Waukesha. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, was a
talented baker and an avid gardener of flowers, fruits and vegetables. She was
known as the “Queen of Canning,” supplying her family and friends with
Lyla will be sadly missed by her children, Derris Elger of Arizona, Lenice (Charles) Wilson
of California and Celeste (Dr. David) Hubbard of Mississippi; grandchildren,
Courtney Wilson, Andrea Carpenter, Andrew (Michelle) Newman, Leslie (Aaron
Smith) Newman and Alan and Alicia Elger; and her great-grandchildren, Kristen and
Geoffrey Carpenter, Timothy and Kaden Newman, and one on the way. She is further
survived by nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters- in-law and friends.
Lyla was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Percy; four brothers; and
celebration of life memorial service will take place at a later date.
