Joan M. Beck

Joan M. Beck of Oconomowoc passed away on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the age 82 years. Joan was born December 18, 1932, in Oconomowoc, to Glenn and Mary Evelyn Barnhart.
She married John Beck on February 10, 1962, in Chicago. Joan is the loving mother of Katherine (Jacob) Olson, Mara (Allen) Beck-Rinnemaki, John (Margaret) Beck, Sharon (Jeffrey) Schwarz and Charles Beck. She is survived by her grandchildren Glen, Lyn and Sidney Olson; Zamiel and Zekiel Schwarz; Clarice Beck; Alexander Beck, Zachary and Brooke Winslow. She is further survived by her brotherin- law Clark Beck and sister-in-law Delores Betts.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and brother-in-law Theodore Beck.
Joan attended St. Jerome Parochial school continuing onto Oconomowoc High School, graduating in 1950. She attended UW-Madison 1950-51, and Secretarial School-Prospect Hall, Milwaukee, from 1952-53. In August 1955, she contracted Bulbar polio, spending eight months at UW Hospitals in Madison. Joan completed her studies at UW-Madison, graduating with a degree in speech therapy in January 1959. She worked in Chicago from 1960-62. During the years of 1964-65, Joan moved back home to care for her mother, Evelyn Barry, who had suffered a stroke. Joan was a homemaker and enjoyed various church and community associations.
Her interests included art, history, music, cooking, reading and gardening. She had a varied career starting with John Oster Company, the Oconomowoc Publishing Company, the American Dental Association, as a speech therapist for the Chicago Public School System, as a secretary for Trane Company, as a copy editor for FOBTA, and a market researcher for Lein/Spiegelhoff.
Friends may visit on Saturday, January 17, from 10:00 AM until time of memorial service 11:30 AM, all at the Schmidt & Bartelt Notbohm-Kreutzmann Funeral Home, 121 S. Cross St., Oconomowoc.
Memorials to AngelsGrace Hospice or the Oconomowoc Historical Society appreciated. Her final rest will be at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
