Dr. G. Daniel Miller

Dr. G. Daniel Miller, age 87, celebrated his first day in heaven on Thursday, February 12, 2015. He was at St. Camillus Assisted Living in Wauwatosa, in the presence of his family. Dan was born to Antoinette K. (Higgins) and Ernest L. Miller Sr. on August 18,1927, in Rockford, Ill. He served in the United States Navy from 1945-47 as an aviation cadet, and went on to Marquette’s School of Medicine, graduating in 1954. He married a wonderful Irish gal, Barbara L. O’Callaghan on June 19th of that same year, and they lived out their marriage promise for these 60 years, raising their eight children together.
Dan served as an anesthesiologist in Oconomowoc and surrounding communities from 1956 to 1988. He was active with Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital even until the present, having acted as the chief of anesthesia, secretary- treasurer, chief of staff and as a corporate member as well as honorary medical staff. Other professional involvements included the Milwaukee Society of Anesthesiologists, the Wisconsin Society of Anesthesiologists, Waukesha County Medical Society, Wisconsin Medical Society, the American Cancer Society of Waukesha County, Wood Veterans Affairs Hospital in Milwaukee, and St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York. Dan was a man of great faith, and he believed strongly in living out the love of God in everyday life. Many organizations, families and individuals benefited from his generosity with his time, talent and treasure, most notably St. Jerome’s Parish of Oconomowoc, the Lutheran Homes of Oconomowoc, AngelsGrace Hospice, the Oconomowoc Historical Society, where many of his unique donations are on display, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, where he served as spiritual adviser, the Franciscan Peacemakers, the Home and School Association of St. Jerome’s, the local Human Concerns Committee, and the Lake Area Free Clinic. Beyond the boundaries of Wisconsin, Dan also contributed to several mission hospitals and schools, especially St. Jude’s Hospital in St. Lucia, Lesser Antilles, and the Kentucky Ridge Development Corp. He was recognized for his volunteerism by being awarded the “Giraffe Award” for sticking out his neck.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Ernest L. Jr., Fr. Robert and John R. Miller.
He is survived by his wife, Barb; children Catherine (Mark) Miller-Temme of Medford, Mary Beth (Michael) McKee of Butler, Peggy (Tony) Haddad of Slinger, Daniel (Lee Ann) of Morgantown, W.V., Nancy Esveld of Fall River, Michael (Sue Fox) of Menomonee Falls, Rick (Cari Hren) of New Berlin and Becky Miller of New Berlin, and 20 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Clemens) Hanneken of Greendale, and numerous friends.
Funeral services will be held at St. Jerome’s Church on Saturday, Feb. 21, at noon, with visitation taking place on Friday, Feb. 20, from 4 pm to 6:30pm, and on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10 am to 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jerome’s building fund, Lake Area Free Clinic and The Oconomowoc Historical Society.
