Robert “Bob” Schmidt was born in Paterson, N.J., on March 12, 1929, the son of Erna Fluegel and Herman Schmidt.
Bob graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., in 1953 with a degree in engineering. While at Coast Guard Academy, Bob met Ruth (Mimi) Nissen and they married on June 11, 1953. In their first three years of marriage, they lived in Portland, Maine, Norfolk, Va., and Cape May, N.J., while Bob served as an officer in the Coast Guard.
Their daughter, Carolyn, was born in Cape May. They next settled near Philadelphia in Wyncote, Pa., and sons Stephen and Paul arrived.
Bob was employed at Honeywell and United Engineers in Philadelphia. In 1967, the Schmidts moved to Oconomowoc, where Bob held various positions in sales and engineering including Sentry Equipment in Oconomowoc, Joseph Schiltz Brewing Company and Badger Meter in Milwaukee before his retirement.
Bob is survived by his three children, Carolyn, Stephen and Paul; his granddaughter Hilary; his son-in-law Bill Clausius; and his daughter-in-law Lisa Schmidt, and her children Philip Michael Keller and Jessica Keller.
Bob will be buried with military honors at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove in a private ceremony on June 2.
Mimi, his wife of nearly 60 years, will be buried with him.
