Janet Sue Schley (nee Smart)

Janet Sue Schley (nee Smart), age 77, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 9, 2015, after a battle with cancer. She was a proud, lifelong resident of Wisconsin, born in Milwaukee and raised in Eagle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Laurel Frederick Smart and Florence Koepsell Smart.

She is survived by her husband of almost 53 years, Gerald “Jerry” Schley of Brookfield; a son, Kurt (Debbie) Schley of Gig Harbor, Wash.; a daughter, Kristen (Mark) Bowling of Benton, Ark.; and seven grandchildren, Nathan Schley of Highland Heights, Ky., Alex Bowling and Joshua Bowling of Siloam Springs, Ark., Jeremiah Bowling and Grace Bowling of Benton, Ark., and Laurel Schley and Jennie Schley of Gig Harbor, Wash.

Janet was a 1956 graduate of Waukesha High School, where she was involved as a Job’s Daughter. In 1960, she graduated from Carroll College with a degree in social work and she enjoyed working as a social worker. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and maintained lifelong friendships with her CHI-O sisters. She also enjoyed exercising at Curves with her friends.

Janet was a member of Waukesha Bible Church for 41 years, where she took part in many activities including ladies’ Bible studies, AWANA, and Vacation Bible School. While living in Wauwatosa from 1974 through 1995, Janet was involved with the Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital, where her husband was president. She contributed her time with many school organizations, including the PTAs at Wilson Elementary and Hawthorne Junior High. She was a supporter/ fan of the Wauwatosa East band, basketball and tennis teams. She was also a member of the Red Hat Club. Janet loved the water, enjoying water skiing and her time as a lifeguard in her younger years. Later, she spent many hours jet skiing on Meta Lake in Eagle River. In addition to cooking, tennis and reading, Janet’s favorite activity was spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and granddogs.

Family will receive friends on Saturday, June 20, at Harder Funeral Home, 18700 W. Capitol Drive, Brookfield, from 1:00-2:30 PM. A celebration of life service will follow visitation at 2:30 PM. Private interment at Prairie Home Cemetery. Memorials to Waukesha Bible Church or Conover Ev. Free Church are appreciated.
