Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Waltman (nee Boteler)

Oct. 3, 1916 — June 15, 2015

Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’Waltman (nee Boteler)Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Waltman of Waukesha passed away on Monday, June 15, 2015, at Seasons Hospice at the age of 98 years. She was born on October 3, 1916, in Phoenixville, Pa., the daughter of George and Caroline Boteler.

Betty moved to Waukesha with her family, where she attended Randall Elementary School and graduated from Waukesha High School. She continued her education at Carroll College and was a member of the Theta Phi Delta Sorority. After being encouraged by a professor to finish her education, Betty graduated in 1942 with a degree in biology and art. Betty married Jerry Waltman in 1939 and was married for 60 years until his death in 2000. Together, they raised four children. The Waltman house was the place to bring your friends. There were always cookies in the cookie jar.

During her lifetime, Betty especially enjoyed sewing, baking and oil painting. She sewed drapes for her husband’s decorating business, dresses for her daughters, and even made doll clothes. Many of her paintings are hanging in her children’s homes. Betty also loved to play bridge and Scrabble with her many friends and enjoyed completing crossword puzzles.

Betty lived a very active life. For seven years, she was a volunteer for the Waukesha Training Center, where she helped mentally challenged adults achieve a productive and positive lifestyle. There were many camping trips to northern Wisconsin with family and friends and workouts at the YMCA. She went cross-country skiing for the first time in her 70s, along with roller skating and sledding. Betty and Jerry traveled to New Orleans, California, New Mexico, Minnesota, Oregon, Illinois and Indiana. At the age of 84, she traveled to Ireland with her daughters.

Betty was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and was loved by all. They will surely miss her baked goods. Until her death, she resided at the Avalon Manor in downtown Waukesha.

Betty is survived by her four children, Jerry (Mary Lou), George (Sharon), Mary Jo (Mitch) and Martha (Kevin); six grandchildren, Bryan, Scott (Christina), Anne (Joel), Curtis, Michelle (Nathan) and Jason (Cherise); and six great-grandchildren, Nora, Ella, Maya, Sydney, Sophie and Miles. She is also survived by Sheryl Waltman, the mother of Betty’s grandchildren, Curtis and Anne.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; sister, Josephine; and brother, Robert.

The visitation for Betty will be held on Saturday, October 3, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the 11:00 a.m. memorial service at First United Methodist Church, 121 Wisconsin Ave., Waukesha. Burial will take place immediately following the memorial service at Prairie Home Cemetery.
