Steve Chicka, 93, went home to his Lord and Savior and his beloved wife of 67 years, Merle, on Monday, June 29, 2015, at Encompass Health Care in Superior. He was born on September 4, 1921, in Hibbing, Minn., and graduated with a high school diploma and two years of college from Hibbing High School. While in Hibbing working at the Hull Rust Iron Ore Mine, he was called to serve his country in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was a sergeant at Selman Field in Monroe, La., where he met his lovely wife. They were married in 1945 in Hibbing, then moved to Wauwatosa, and then to New Berlin. While there, he worked for Schlitz for 36 years, retiring in 1981. He was an active member of the Westbrooke Wesleyan Methodist Church in New Berlin. Steve and his family loved to travel all over the world, including trips to Israel, the WWII battlefields of Europe and his parents homeland, the former Yugoslavia.
Steve was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Merle; his parents, George and Staka; son, Steven; sisters Mayme, Mary, Zorie and Jenny; and brother Mike.
He is survived by his sisters Anne (Murray) Seligman, Dess (late Richard) Newman, and Donna Chicka; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Chicka; sons David (Judy) and Ron (Ellen); grandchildren Nicholas (Karyn), Michael (Margaret), Benjamin (Jessica), Jonathan and Thomas; and great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Anna, Tristan, Stevie, Ruby and Caroline. Steve will also be missed by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 7, at Church and Chapel Funeral Home, 1875 N. Calhoun Road, Brookfield, from 11:00 AM until the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Interment to follow at Good Hope Cemetery.
