J.T. Knight of Las Cruces, N.M., passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 9, 2015.
J.T. was an exceptionally bright, funny, compassionate and endlessly creative person who cared deeply for his family and friends. Born in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Waukesha, J.T. excelled in school, participating in orchestra, photography, multimedia art, debate club and drama. J.T. received an academic scholarship to Columbia University in New York City, where he earned his undergraduate degree in political science and Spanish literature. He then earned a law degree from the University of Wisconsin- Madison.
Every summer in his youth, J.T. would visit his grandparents, Mary and Rusty Bargfeld, at their ranch in the mountain valley town of Arlee, Mont. He would help with daily farm chores such as collecting eggs, milking cows and feeding calves. J.T. would also pick cherries and huckleberries, attend rodeos, fish for trout in mountain streams and celebrate Independence Day with fireworks shows for his close family.
Throughout his life, J.T. loved to travel. He visited Europe, Africa, Asia, and Central and South America, often taking family members with him and documenting his travels with photographs. After college, J.T. backpacked with his 70 year-old grandmother to Greece, France, England and Ireland.
His involvement in Las Cruces community life included volunteer work at the Fountain Theatre in Old Mesilla and the Casa de Peregrinos Food Bank, as well as work on various committees affiliated with New Mexico State University, where he was pursuing a degree in education.
J.T. was devoted to his grandmother Mary, and helped care for her in her final years in Las Cruces. He regularly traveled with her to Wisconsin and Montana for family visits. He cared for Mary until her death in 2013.
J.T. loved photography and took prize-winning photos.
He played the viola and was a past member of the Las Cruces Symphony.
J.T. was greatly loved and will be missed by his parents, John and Lynn Knight; brother and sister-in-law, TJ and Erin Knight; niece, Olivia Knight and nephew, Ian Solt; mother, Terri Mertz, and and other extended family.
