Robert Wayne Heideman
Sept. 22, 1925 — Nov. 26, 2015

Robert Wayne “Bob” Heideman grew up in Minneapolis, Minn., and Des Moines, Iowa.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 17, on February 19, 1943. He was called back in the Korean War when he received a commission. He trained on naval guns as a sight setter, worked on Navy ships in the South Pacific for submarine defense, and was in defense forces on Midway.

Bob attended Dowling High School and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, and in 1950 he married Lorraine Koenigs.

They raised seven children, born between 1951 and 1962.

Bob served as executive officer of the Marine Reserves in Des Moines, and later moved to Milwaukee, where he was staff unit commanding officer. He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Marine Reserves in 1969 after 26 years service.

In civilian life, Robert worked as an insurance underwriter in real estate sales, and was appointed veterans service officer for Dodge County. During retirement years, he enjoyed travel and wintering in Texas. Robert was a voracious reader and was extraordinary in his knowledge retention. At family gatherings, he loved to impart historic facts and analysis, often drawing parallels between historic conflicts and current events.

Bob Heideman is survived by children Kathy (Jim), David (Sue), Tom (Martha), Jim (Sonya, Rhonda (Jon) and Renee (Cam); grandchildren Eric, Craig, Kristin, Wade, Amber, Rachel, Alyson and Robert; and great-grandchildren Jeremy, Riley Ann and Charlotte.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, and daughter Annette.

Services for Bob will be held on Friday, December 11, at 12:00 PM with a visitation for family and friends to start at 10:00 AM, all to take place at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Mapleton, with burial to follow at the church cemetery.
