Sidney A. ĎSidí Mathes
Sid A. Mathes of Waukesha passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at the Virginia Health & Rehabilitation Center at the age of 88 years. He was born in Pardeeville, the son of Herman F. and Susie M. Mathes. Sid married the love of his life, Mary Jean, on October 27, 1962.
He was a proud United States Army 24th Infantry Division World War II, Occupation of Japan, veteran. Sid was a member of VFW Post 721, Soat-Vergenz and American Legion Post 8, where he was a chaplain and a past commander of both. Sid was also a member of the Military Order of the Seam Squirrel Cooties.
He was a longtime member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Pewaukee. One of Sidís biggest enjoyment was singing, having sung in the Gethsemane United Methodist Church choir for over 40 years. He also sang in the Senior Songsters in Waukesha and the Ambassadors of Harmony Barbershop Chorus. People at the Virginia enjoyed listening to Sidís beautiful bass voice.
Sid was a youth counselor III with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections at Ethan Allen for 30 years. After retirement, he worked part time for over 12 years as a parking lot cashier with the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team at County Stadium and Miller Park. He was an avid fan of the Brewers, Bucks, Packers and Badgers. As a Badger season football ticket holder, he enjoyed attending the 1994 Rose Bowl. Sid would also go and see the Brewers at spring training in Arizona.
Sid will be lovingly missed by his wife, Mary Jean, of 53 years; his son, Mark Mathes of Forbes, Minn., and his siblings Beverly Hagen, Betty (Darwin) Krueger, Eugene (Betsy) Mathes and Wayne Mathes. He is further survived by his brothers-in-law Forest, Donald (Mary) and Robert (Cheryl) Lehman; sisters- in-law Bernice and Leah Lehman; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Sid was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Nina (Alvin) Kearley and Maxine (Paul) Lippert; sister-n-law Nellie Mathes; brother-in-law Howard Hagen; parents-inlaw Paul and Mary Lehman; brothers-in-law Lester (Eva), Victor, Wallace, and Herbert Lehman; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Stanley) Miller and Kura Lehman.
A visitation for Sid will be held on Saturday, December 26, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Gethsemane United Methodist Church, 642 Main St., Pewaukee, WI 53072. The Rev. Pete Peterson will be presiding. There will be a VFW Post #721 prayer service at 9:15 a.m. The burial will take place at Tigerton Union Cemetery, in Tigerton, on Tuesday, December 29, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Sidís name to Gethsemane United Methodist Church (see address above) or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
