Joseph L. Thamke found peace on Friday, March 4, 2016, at the age of 95.
He is survived by his son Gary (Karla) Thamke; daughters Jan Kriewaldt, Kris (Steve) Holverson and Gale Murphy; grandchildren Paul Kriewaldt, Joy (Nicholas) Williams, Jodi Tyler, Lisa (Tom) great grandchildren Charlotte Williams, Allison Tyler and Bryan Tyler; and his sistersin- law Thelma Thamke and Harriet Zuehlke. He is further survived by his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Irma, his grandson Adam, and his brothers and sisters.
Joe was a farmer all his life, enjoyed wood-working, and had a passion for his country. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion Post 189, and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Joe was a World War II veteran and was a military police guard at the Sugamo prison in Japan. He guarded the man who gave the orders for Pearl Harbor. He went on the Honor Flight in 2014 and coordinated the design, funding, and erection of the All Wars Memorial in Concord Park.
Visitation was held Tuesday, March 8, at St. Johnís Lutheran Church, W407 Highway 18, Sullivan.
