April 9, 1926 – April 1, 2016
Betty Bonnie Sprung, nee Ries, formerly of Waukesha, died Friday, April 1, 2016, in Peoria, Ariz. at age 89. She was born April 9, 1926, in Milwaukee to parents Alexander and Bonnie (nee Korotkoff) Ries.
Betty was a 1944 graduate of Milwaukee West Division High School and married Herman “Hummer” Sprung on May 21, 1949 at St. John’s Church in Merton. They settled in Merton for eight years before moving to Waukesha. She was a housewife raising three children (and selling homemade decorated Christmas cookies) before going to work in the early 1960s at Amron Corp. and later as a comptometer operator at Omar Bakery and Waukesha Foundry. After Herman retired in 1978 they spent summers in Door County, where Betty managed several candy and fudge shops. They moved to Sun City, Ariz., in 1985.
One of Betty’s favorite pastimes was making custom- designed jeweled boutique Christmas ornaments with styrofoam balls, beads, old jewelry, pins, ribbons, and cloth. She also knitted many afghans and other items for family and friends as well as selling them in Door County shops.
Betty is survived by her sister Claudette Laughlin of Millbrae, Calif.; daughter, Bonnie (Terry) Hansen of Surprise, Ariz.; and her son, Richard (Neva) Sprung of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren Jarryd (Kayla) Rutter, Justyn Rutter, Lisa (Andrew) Hansen, Erik (Tara) Hansen, Meghan (Rick) Singer and Sydney (Eddy) Erlikh, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Roger Sprung, and her loving husband, Herman, who called her “my bride” for 55 years.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 13, at United Church of Sun City in Sun City, Ariz.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent in her name to Peoria Good Shepherd Care Center, 10323 W. Olive Ave., Peoria, AZ 85345.
