Marie D. Berg |
Jan. 5, 1935 — Oct. 20, 2016
In the early morning hours of Thursday, October 20, 2016, Marie Dorothy Berg broke free from the chains of her struggle and returned to her Savior at the age of 81. Born Marie Dorothy Steffan on January 5, 1935, to Theodore and Cecilia Steffan, Marie was a graduate of Waukesha High School in 1953 and later attended Marquette University for two years in the medical technician program.
Marie met Roger Williams Berg during her time at Waukesha High School, where they dated for several years before marrying on April 11, 1955. The high school sweethearts turned husband and wife went into business as Park Farm, raising cattle and planting crops for what would become a career of over 50 years. It was there that Marie pioneered the use of electronic filing for all of the farm’s records, transforming the way they ran the business.
Marie was active in many areas of community service at the same time. She sang in the church choir and was the treasurer of Bethesda Church and School.
She took great pride in serving as the fire phone dispatcher and woman’s volunteer for the Wales Fire Auxiliary for over 10 years. Marie was a town supervisor and chairwoman of the Town Park for the Town of Genesee. She was also a polling booth volunteer.
Hayward is home to the family’s cabin. Roger and Marie spent much of their time throughout the year enjoying the Northwoods together. Marie was thrilled with the outdoors: fishing, bird watching, gardening and canning were some of her favorite pastimes.
Hayward and the surrounding towns also afforded her many opportunities to search for unique finds at rummage sales and antique stores. Her handiwork in crocheting, knitting and quilting remain in the family.
Marie was an exceptional wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. She dedicated her entire life to raising four children and spoiling even more grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For this she was adored by her family and revered by her friends. The roots of her love run so deeply through her family not one branch bears fruit void of her labor. It is for that reason, though no longer here, Marie’s presence will never be forgotten.
Marie is survived by her loving husband, Roger; children Terry (Barb), David (Jill), Randy (Michelle) and Bonnie; grandchildren Matthew, Joshua (Carrie), Sarah (Elizabeth), Karlie, Steven (Sherry), Michael, Hunter, Spencer, Samantha (Matt), Jake (Ashley), Mitchell (Kayla), Hailey and Hannah; and great-grandchildren Isabella, Jackson, Mason and Reid.
The visitation for Marie will be held on Saturday, October 29, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the 11:30 a.m. memorial service at Jerusalem Presbyterian Church, 207 W Main St., Wales. The Rev. Jerry Kramer will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are accepted at either the American Cancer Society, N19W24350 Riverwood Drive, Waukesha, WI 53188 or AngelsGrace Hospice, N74 W35908 Servants Way Oconomowoc, WI 53066.
A very special thanks goes out to AngelsGrace Hospice in Oconomowoc for the respectful and extremely loving care given to Marie in her final days.
