Gerald Franklin ‘Sir G’ Carman

Gerald Franklin “Sir G” Carman, 82, of Waukesha, died on Monday, October 3, 2016, at home.

He was born on July 6, 1934, in Northfield, Minnesota, to Clarence and Marie (Cordes) Carman.

Gerald graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army and then U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1961. He was a business teacher from 1961 to 1965 and executive director at Phantom Lake YMCA Camp from 1965 to 1997. As a member of the American Camping Association, he served on numerous committees visiting camps seeking accreditation.

He was a member of the Random Lake Historical Society, Ozaukee County Historical Society, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and C.L.O.W.N.S. of Waukesha. He volunteered at HAWS, Section School and Pioneer Village of Ozaukee County. Hundreds of children loved this genuine Santa’s helper for 30 years.

Surviving are his wife, Susanne Carman of Waukesha; one son, Christopher Gerald (Susan Patel) Carman of Mukwonago; stepchildren Kent Riedesel of Algoma and Pamela Shapson (John) Prestby of Nashotah; grandchildren  Grace, Ella, Lily and Maya Carman, Rebecca (Brian) Frey, Amber Riedesel, and Samuel and Elisa Shapson; a great-grandson, Aldo Frey; nephews, Timothy Carman, James (Andrea) Carman and Mark (Lynne) Carman; a grandnephew, James Carman; a grandniece, Kelly (Michael) Cruthers; a brother-in-law,  Harold (Laraine) Slavens; a sister-in-law, Collyn Slavens; the family of Rhua Slavens Kepferle; grand-nieces and -nephews and their families; and a godchild, Breanna (Justin) Hellenbrand. He is further survived by thousands of campers, staff, camping friends and colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Eugene Carman; a stepson, Richard Riedesel; a brother-in-law, William Slavens; and a cousin, Rhua Slavens Kepferle.

A Celebration of Sir G’s life will be held at Phantom Lake YMCA Camp in Mukwonago at 11 a.m. on Sunday, November 13. Visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m.
