Robert J. ‘Bob’ Sandlass
Robert J. Sandlass of Wales went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at the age of 82 years. He was born in La Crosse on September 8, 1934, the son of John H. and Erna M. (nee Klabe) Sandlass.
Bob graduated from Central High School in La Crosse in 1953, and married the love of his life, Janet Jean Lueck on November 30, 1957. Bob received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse and went on to receive his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He taught in the math and science departments at Mount Horeb High School and Kettle Moraine High School during the ’60s and ’70s. He was affectionately known as the teacher who walked on his hands and ate chalk. Bob was head tennis coach for many years at Kettle Moraine High School, started the Kettle Moraine Tennis Club, and coordinated many summer tennis camps for young players.
He was the business owner and entrepreneur of KM Sports, Pewaukee, which began in 1972 as the Kettle Moraine Tennis Service. The legacy of his business continues with his children and grandchildren. He also operated Heritage Ridge Ski Trails and coordinated competitive cross country ski races, which were attended by the U.S. Ski Team.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pewaukee. He sang in a variety of choral ensembles throughout his life and traveled extensively throughout the United States with his bride of 59 years. Bob was an avid runner and valued daily exercise in preserving his health and wellbeing.
Bob will be sadly missed by his wife, Janet (nee Lueck) Sandlass; sons, Gary (Kelly) Sandlass and Brian (Amy) Sandlass; daughter Karen (Steve) Vasatko; eight grandchildren; and his sisters, Elizabeth Turner and Helen Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother.
A visitation for Bob will be held on Sunday, February 5, from 2 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. with the funeral service at 4 p.m. at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, W240-N3103 Pewaukee Road, Pewaukee, WI 53072. Burial will take place privately at Salem Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bob’s name would be appreciated to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church (see address above) or the Alzheimer’s Association, 620 S. 76th St., #160, Milwaukee, WI 53214.
