Melvin ‘Frank’ Matz
Melvin "Frank" Matz, 99, of Birnamwood, died on Saturday, April 15, 2017, under the care of LeRoyer Hospice, Antigo, at Cloverleaf Terrace, Birnamwood.
He was born on the farm on October 2, 1917, in Birnamwood (Marathon County), the son of the late Frank and Alma (Geise) Matz.
Melvin attended St. Paul Parochial School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. His service took him to Africa and Italy.
In April of 2013, Melvin was humbled to participate in the Honor Flight.
On February 18, 1950, Melvin was united in marriage to Mildred Books Houlihan in Birnamwood. She preceded him in death on February 22, 1974.
He then married Irene (Lillge) Krause on November 23, 1979. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2012.
Melvin retired from Waukesha Motor Works. He enjoyed golfing and "fixing" things, mostly repairing and building cars. He also enjoyed traveling, which took him throughout the U.S. and to Europe and Italy. Melvin also had a love for fishing and always had a pole ready to cast.
Melvin is survived by two stepchildren, Don (Dianne) Krause of Melbourne, Fla., and Diane (James) Yatzeck of Mukwonago; grandchildren, Donald (Mimi) Krause, Michelle Krause and Lisa (George) Bogrand; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Reed and Cody; siblings, Edward (Marion) Matz of Birnamwood, Lois Liethen, Norrie and Shirley (Bob) Clark of Birnamwood; brother-in-law, Keith White; sister-in-law, Marion Matz; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wives, Mildred and Irene, Melvin was preceded in death by four stepsons, Larry, Charles, Robert and Pat Houlihan; his sisters, Eudora Crawford, Evelyn Frederick and Mildred White; brothers-in-law, Warren Crawford and Eldo Frederick; and nephews, Lee Eysturlid, Kenneth Frederick and Kevin Frederick.
The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. The Rev. Matthew Christians will officiate. Interment will be on Friday at 1 p.m. at Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of service at the church.
