Jan. 21, 1943 — April 13, 2017
Marge Achtenhagen (nee Carenen) of Mukwonago passed away peacefully at Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs, Fla., on April 13, 2017, at the age of 74.
Marge was born in Wauwatosa to Paul and Millie Carenen. She graduated from Wauwatosa High School in 1961. In 1963, Marge married Dean Achtenhagen. Together, they purchased a horse farm in the Town of Mukwonago and began breeding and training quarter horses.
Their unforgettable stallion, Mr. Tailwind, sired over 200 foals. Of those, 100 went on to perform in the show ring, earning 10 World Championships.
Most of all, though, Marge will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, a good neighbor and friend to many. For the past 20 years, Marge enjoyed spending the winters at her home in Estero, Fla.
For the last 10 years, she enjoyed the companionship of Richard "Dick"’ Michels, who she married in 2009. Together they enjoyed golf, bocce and playing cards with their countless friends in Wisconsin and Florida.
Marge and Dick also had a passion for traveling, including many cruises and trips to Hawaii and most recently Cuba.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Millie Carenen, and a brother, Paul George Carenen.
Marge’s beautiful spirit will continue to live through her family and many good friends. She is survived by her husband, Richard Michels; dear brother, Mark Carenen; sons, Bret (Amy) and Bart; daughter, Shelly Parker (Mike); eight grandchildren, Brady, Linley, Sophie, Abby, Lauren, Ashlee, James and Hunter; and many other relatives and dear friends.
Please join us in a celebration of her life. A visitation and memorial service will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, May 6, at Fox River Christian Church, located at S67-W19491 Tans Drive, Muskego. A luncheon will follow at Marge’s favorite restaurant, The Blue Heron Supper Club, W229S8300 Big Bend Drive, Big Bend.
