Betty KnoebelBetty Knoebel, a lifelong resident of Waukesha, died on Monday, August 14, 2017, at the age of 94 years. She was born on October 16, 1922, the daughter of Alban and Elizabeth (nee Rawlinson) Bernatz.

Betty graduated from La Crosse State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science in education. She married Lawrence “Larry” W. Knoebel on March 2, 1946, at Blessed Sacrament Church in La Crosse. They lived, loved and laughed together for 61 years. Betty worked in the Waukesha Public School system for 56 years, retiring in the late ’70s. She was a charter member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and was also active with the Christian Women’s Group, Beacon Lights, Catholic Study Club and member of Waukesha Service Club.

Betty enjoyed reading, baking, playing bridge and had a great sense of humor. She and Larry loved to travel, entertain and will be remembered for many porch parties and famous pig roasts.

Betty will be sadly missed by her daughters, Mary La Roach of Franklin and Barb (Kevin) Kaufmann of Waukesha; her grandchildren, Katie (Chuck) Semrad, Jason (Victoria) Kaufmann and Lisa Kaufmann; great-grandchildren, Larry, Nick and Dale Semrad; sister, Dottie McGrane; and brother-in-law, Dr. George Ellenz. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Larry; sisters, Margaret Ellenz and Mary Ellen Storie; and sister-in-law, Madelyn Costin.

The family would like to thank Dr. Leif Esbensen for his kind and compassionate care; Sue Scheff for being a longtime and loyal friend; Nora and John Eibl for their unending kindness; other members of Betty’s daily mass group, who were a caring family who always supported her in need; and the Rev. Howard for his sense of humor and encouragement.

A visitation for Betty will be held on Friday, August 18, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. followed by a memorial Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 225 S. Hartwell Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186. The Rev. Howard Haase will be officiating.

Burial will be private at a later date.
