August S. ‘Augie’ Bruno
Jan. 27, 1932 — Sept. 19, 2017
August S. “Augie” Bruno passed to eternal life Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at age 85 years due to complications from throat cancer.
He was the loving husband of LaVerne (nee Mathey); dear father of Christine (Joseph) Gush, Steve (Cynthia) Bruno, Robert Bruno and Susan (1958-1962) Bruno; proud grandfather of Nicholas and Stephanie Bruno, Michelle (Todd) Nadeau, Christopher Gush, Susan (Paul) LaRouche and Steven (Kathryn) Gush; loving great-grandfather of Ashley and DJ; brother-in-law to Ruth (the late Dominik) Bruno; and dedicated friend to Fr. Michael Frankwick (and Brother Basil). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
August was born in Waukesha to James and Anna (Micheale) Bruni, who had immigrated to the U.S. from Ceccano, Italy.
As the family story goes, James and Anna changed their family name to Bruno to simplify mail delivery. August was the youngest and last surviving of six siblings (Frank, Kate, Mary, James and Dominik). Augie worked for over 30 years at Borden Dairy in West Allis. Starting as a milkman, he worked his way up over the years training semi-drivers and in sales as distributor manager. This role was perfect for his outgoing (social butterfly) personality. He spent his last 14 working years at the Metro Milwaukee Auto Auction. Again his personality and affection for cars (he loved Buicks!) was a great fit. He was a storyteller, bringing smiles and laughs to family, friends and co-workers. After he finally retired, he was a dedicated husband and caregiver to his wife as she struggled to recover from a devastating fall that landed her in a wheelchair and residency at St. Ann Rest Home. August was a daily visitor, sometimes two or three times, to spend time with his wife. He was happiest over the last several years of his life when he was in the same room with his wife, LaVerne.
Visitation will be Saturday, September 30, at the Bevsek-Verbick Funeral Home, 10210 W. Lincoln Ave., West Allis, at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Ann Rest Home, 2020 S. Muskego Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53204, are appreciated.
