WAUKESHA Sandra Anne Mertes
After graduating from CUA, Sandy worked as a software developer and senior computer programmer in the Washington area, before moving back to Wisconsin to care for her parents. In 1978, she joined the international actuarial and consulting firm Milliman in Brookfield and worked there for the rest of her long career, serving as a programmer, a computer resource manager and an actuary. Sandy was a longtime member of the Mathematical Association of America and the Society of Actuaries. An avid equestrian, Sandy competed in regional Class B hunter competitions on her horse Costello. She was also the proud owner of Reno Runaway, a prize-winning horse on the national Class A hunter circuit. She enthusiastically supported HAWS, the Humane Animal Welfare Society, and made comfortable homes for several foundling cats over the years. Her love of gardening prompted her to attend classes in the UW system to learn landscaping and garden design. Sandy also loved Milwaukee baseball, rooting for both the Braves and the Brewers. She practiced the lost art of scoring every ballgame she attended by hand, the mark of a true baseball fan. Visitation and a memorial service were held at Shorehaven in Oconomowoc, where Sandy had been residing since suffering a stroke in 2015. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Sandy’s name to HAWS, the Humane Animal Welfare Society, 701 Northview Road, Waukesha, WI 53188 (https://hawspets.org/); or the Rides & Reins Therapeutic Riding Center, 4371 Arthur Road, Slinger, WI 53086 (http://ridesandreins.org/). Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home, Cremation and Pre-Planning Services is serving the family.
