Edward L. CohnEdward L. Cohn, an owner of the landmark Cohnís Shoe Store in downtown Waukesha, died peacefully on Nov. 23 in Chandler, Ariz., at the Dobson Home Hospice.

His wife of 60 years, Toby, was at his side. Ed was 82.

Born in Milwaukee, Ed joined his familyís shoe store in 1960. The business was founded in 1921 by brothers-in-law Samuel Cohn and Phillip Cohen. Ed retired in 1998 after closing the store earlier that year.

A state historical marker noting the business of 77 years and its location in the Almont Building stands along the Fox River downtown.

Ed graduated from Waukesha High School, where he was involved in football and tennis. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he graduated in 1957 with a bachelorís degree in business administration.

Ed was a member of the Phi Sigma Delta fraternity, where he made lifelong friends. He also met the love of his life, Toby Heilprin, at the university. They married on Oct. 6, 1957. Before returning to Waukesha, Ed worked in the insurance business in Madison where his two daughters, Debra and Jodi, were born. His son, Mark, was born in Waukesha.

Edward was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel, and father, Samuel.

He is survived by his wife, Toby (nee Heilprin); sister, Marilyn Kagan of San Diego, Calif.; daughters, Debra Cohn-Madson (Paul) of Maplewood, Minn., and Jodi Cohn-Benowitz (Sam) of Henderson, Nev.; son, Mark (Bonnie) of Waukesha; grandsons Nathan (Ran Mo) and Colin Madson, Ethan Benowitz and step-grandson Eric Stach; and granddaughter Maya Benowitz; and soon-to-be-great-grandson Lukas Kol Madson.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Meli Bar & Restaurant, 294 W. Main St., Waukesha, courtesy of proprietor Llazar Konda. The family asks that attendees wear red or green and gold in honor of Edís favorite sports teams ó the Wisconsin Badgers and the Green Bay Packers. Also, wear shoes purchased at Cohnís Shoe Store, if you have any.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at Forest Hill Cemetery, 1 Speedway Road, Madison.
