Robert Oliver Wierdsma

Robert O. Wierdsma, 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2018, at Avow Hospice in Naples, Fla. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Christenson; sons Tom (Ann) Wierdsma and Robb (Cheryl) Wierdsma; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Strobel Wierdsma, and his companion later in life, Naomi Parks.
He was born October 3, 1923, in Milwaukee. He enrolled briefly at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was a decorated World War II European Theatre P-47 fighter pilot and flew 32 missions. He was a prisoner of war in Germany and was liberated in 1945. Following the war, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was also a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
He was a longtime resident of Oconomowoc. Along with his father, Oliver, and brother, Bill, he was a principal in the general contracting company, Oliver Construction. The company was active in southeastern Wisconsin and the Midwest. Bob was a long time president of Oliver Construction Co., active in United Way, the United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, YMCA, and a member and past commodore of Lac LaBelle Yacht Club.
Following his retirement, he became a resident of Naples, Fla., where he enjoyed sailing, tennis, fishing, the Forum Club and golf at the Moorings Country Club.
Robert was well respected, enjoyed life and his smile spread joy to everyone around him.
