Sylvia R. Staehler
Sylvia R. Staehler, nee Schloemer, 98, of West Bend, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005 at the Samaritan Health Center.
She was born Nov. 26, 1907 in the town of Jackson to the late Charles P. and Elizabeth (nee Lorenz) Schloemer.
Following her graduation from West Bend High School in 1927, she attended the Teacherís College in Normal, Ill.
Upon completion, Sylvia returned to the Jackson area teaching at area schools, including Cheeseville and Woodlawn.
After her marriage to Joseph J. Staehler on June 24, 1936 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend, the couple settled in St. Michaels.
It was at that time she stopped teaching to become a full-time wife and mother.
When her children were grown, Sylvia continued her teaching career at St. Michaelís School until the school closed in the late 1960s.
After her retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, gardening, planting and caring for trees and being a loving grandmother.
The school teacher in her came out every time she would read stories to her grandchildren.
Sylvia participated in numerous church activities over the years at St. Michaelís Church.
Survivors include five children, Joseph (Sharon) of Shelbyville, Ind., Fr. Adrian OFM Cap. of Monte Alverno in Appleton, Karen (Ray) Wollner of Kewaskum, Steven (Rita) of Kewaskum and Beth Marie (Fred) Lang of West Bend; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Catherine Hahn of Butler; a special friend, Elfrieda Staehler of Fortville, Ind.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Joseph, on Sept. 11, 1980; two brothers, Lester and Roland Schloemer and a sister, Marion Theusch.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. at St. Michaelís Catholic Church, 8877 Forestview Road in St. Michaels (Kewaskum).
Burial will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the church cemetery.
Visitation at the church only will be Sunday from 3 until 4:45 p.m.
The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.
