Loyal Babcock Wells
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 23 at Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Mequon for Loyal Babcock Wells of Mequon, who passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005 surrounded by his loving children, at the age of 89. Mueller Funeral Home in Cedarburg is assisting the family with arrangements.
Loyal was born on Feb. 11, 1916 in Dodge Center, Minn. On May 21, 1941 he married his wife of 49 years, the late Ruth Meyers. In 1937, he graduated from UW-Madison and remained a devoted Badger fan for the rest of his life. Loyal was involved in the fur industry during the days when Ozaukee County played an important national role in the fur trade. He was treasurer of Federal Foods in Mequon for several years and then co-founded Ross-Wells in Mequon with his lifelong friend and business partner, W.J. (Bill) Ross. In 1992, he formed a citrus production company near Haines City, Fla., which specialized in growing pomelos.
Loyal lived in Cedarburg for 50 years before moving to Mequon in 1992. During that time was involved in many civic activities. He was a director of Colonial State Bank (presently M&I) in Cedarburg and a member of the board of trustees at the former Milton College.
Loyal was a very active member of the Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club where he volunteered his time and talents for over 47 years. He served as their president and received the club’s honorary Paul Harris award. He was instrumental in founding Rotary Park of Mequon, where he donated the Pukaite Woods with the Loyal Wells Nature Walk.
Besides his devotion to family and community, Loyal had a special love for trees. During the past 30 years he planted at least 30,000 trees, more than 1,000 trees each year.
Loyal is survived by his wife Eve Oliver Wells of Palm Harbor, Fla.; his children Marilyn (William) Sprague of Devon, Pa., Jean (Gregory "Sandy") Custer of Mequon, Susan (Daniel) Minahan of Mequon, Robert (Cecelia) Wells of Mequon and John Wells of Mequon; grandchildren W. The Wells family would like to extend their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff of the ER and the ICU at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, and to Dr. David Kress and Dr. Bruce Rowe.
