Elizabeth H. Washa

Elizabeth H. Washa, nee Harrison, 91, of Big Cedar Lake, entered eternal peace on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at Cedar Lake Health Care Center.

Elizabeth was born July 20, 1914 to Homer and Georgia (nee Maxon) Washa in the town of West Bend, where she was also raised.

She graduated from West Bend High School in 1932, and went on to further her education at Michael Reese Hospital, School of Nursing, in Chicago.

In 1936, Elizabeth earned her registered nurse degree and utilized it as a private duty nurse until 1939.

On June 10, 1939, she married the love of her life and best friend, Arthur A. Washa in Milwaukee, where the couple moved after marriage.

She was a dedicated employee of Columbia and St. Joseph’s hospitals, and later attended Marquette University to obtain her health certification in public health.

Elizabeth then worked for the Milwaukee County Health Department for 15 years.

Again, Elizabeth went on to further her education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in order to obtain an elementary teaching degree.

She taught in the Milwaukee Public School System for two years and then at McLane Elementary School in West Bend for 10 years.

After dedicating her time to teaching children, she rekindled her love for nursing at Cedar Lake Health Care Center, retiring in 1984.

Again in 1989, she continued to practice nursing at Cedar Lake Health Care Center, and began to enjoy retirement in 1994.

Elizabeth was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of West Bend, and was a volunteer of St. Joseph’s Hospital of West Bend, Cedar Lake Health Care Center, Girl Scouts and Brownies, and Cub Scouts.

Elizabeth’s life will be honored and remembered always by her daughter, Ann Tews of West Bend; her grandchildren, Julie Tews-Schaller of West Bend, Elizabeth (Steven) Lemley of Oshkosh, Michael (Jenny) Tews of Kaukauna, Michele (Russell) Schmidt of Jackson, Andrew Washa of Kewaskum and Kristen (Christopher) Flynn of West Bend; and her great-grandchildren, Michael, Isabella, Matthew, Emily, Mark, Will, Harrison, Ava, and Lily.

She will also be deeply missed by nieces, nephews, other special relatives and many dear friends.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur, in 1980; her sister, Jane Harrison; her brother, Holmer "Bill" Harrison; her son, Arthur, and daughter-in-law, Cheryl; her granddaughter, Wendy Nachreiner; and her great-grandson, Matthew Salamone.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 28, at 5 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend, with Pastor David Schoob officiating.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at 5 p.m.

Cremation will take place at Paradise Cremation Services of West Bend, followed by interment of ashes at Cedar Creek Cemetery of the town of Polk at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Cedar Creek Cemetery Association.
