Joseph J. "Joe" Wagner Sr.
Joseph J. "Joe" Wagner Sr. of Hartford passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at his residence. He was 84 years old.
He was born Jan. 1, 1922 in Lannon to Anton and Magdalena (nee Bater) Wagner. He married Gertrude Hetzel on July 10, 1945 at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Hartford.
Joe owned and operated Wagner’s Tap from 1956 to 1970. He also worked for International Stamping for many years until his retirement in 1984.
Joe was a retired member of the Hartford Fire Department and served as an assistant fire chief and then became fire chief in the early 1970s.
He belonged to the VFW, enjoyed gardening, cooking and spending time at their lake cottage with family.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; three sons, Richard (Charleen) of Hartford, Joseph Jr. (Heidi) of Hartford, and Gregory (Susan) of Colgate; one daughter, Carol (Jon) Reis of Hartford; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Martin (Lorraine) Hetzel of Hartford; and two sister-in-laws, Georgia Hetzel of Hartford, and Virginia (James) Menzel of Hartford. Joe is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, brother-in-laws and one sister-in-law.
Mass of Christian Burial for Joe was Sunday, April 23, 2006 at St. Kilian Catholic Church, with Fr. Michael Petrie officiating. Family greeted relatives and friends at the funeral home prior to the service.
Interment was at St. Kilian Cemetery, Hartford.
Shimon Funeral Home in Hartford assisted the family.
