Florence Frances Kmet Kane
Funeral services were held on Aug. 19 at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Ill., for Florence Frances Kmet Kane, formerly of Mequon. Florence died on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006 at the age of 84, surrounded by her family at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon, Ill. Visitation was held on Aug. 18 at the funeral home.
Florence was born on Jan. 15, 1922 in Taylor Springs, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Danilla Ferjancic Kmet who preceded her in death.
Florence is survived by her husband of 62 years and love of her life, G. Mitchell (Mike) Kane; children Nancy Hannebaum and her husband Reed of Belleville, Ill., daughter Kathy of Menlo Park, Calif., George and his wife Kathy of Columbus, Ohio, and Lawrence and his wife Karla of Brimfield, Ill.; grandchildren Matt and Ben Hall and Danica, Mitchell, DeWitt, Sara and Erica Kane. She also is survived by her sister Virginia Strukel of Milwaukee; a niece and nephew; two aunts; cousins; and four brothers-in-law and their families.
Florence was a 1943 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Commerce and Business Administration. Following their marriage, life took her and Mike to Diamond Lake, Ill., then Ringwood and Richmond, Ill., then to Mequon in 1967 and finally to Mount Vernon, Ill., where they had lived since 1994. Over the years, Florence was involved in numerous volunteer activities as well as employed in a number of ways, but her greatest accomplishment in her eyes and the source of the greatest satisfaction was her marriage, her children and her grandchildren.
Florence was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon and its Pioneers Club, the Mount Vernon Business and Professional Women’s Club, Jefferson County Home and Community Extension and Lodge 567 of the Slovene National Benefit Society. While living in Mequon, she was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Woman’s Club, Newcomers and Postscripts.
