Elroy Nicolaus Remmel
Elroy Nicolaus Remmel, 88, of the town of Erin, was welcomed home by his Lord on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005 at Aurora Medical Center of Hartford.
Elroy was born Nov. 10, 1917 to Joseph and Alma (nee Meinecke) Remmel in Kewaskum.
He received his high school diploma in 1936, and furthered his education in woodworking at West Bend Vocational School.
Elroy married the love of his life, Bernice Amanda Degner, on Aug. 3, 1940 in West Bend, where she was born.
He worked various jobs, including masonry and at Amity Leather, and later dedicated his time to Canol Oil Line Project in the Northwest Territory, Canada as a blacksmith.
He honorably served his country in the United States Army from Feb. 15, 1944 to Jan. 25, 1946 as a sergeant, second echelon light and heavy-duty truck mechanic and driver.
He earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal and the American Theater Service Medal.
After returning from the service, Elroy worked at Charles Hess Sausage Co. in Milwaukee for several years, at Remmel’s Food Market beginning in 1948, and later was a devoted employee at Lerners Food Market in Milwau-kee as a meat cutter for 26 years.
Among Elroy’s favorite pastimes were hunting and using his artistic abilities carving wooden sculptures, like wild waterfowl, birds and totem poles.
Elroy will be deeply missed by his treasured children, Ronald Remmel and his wife, Effie, of Katy, Texas, Alan Remmel and his wife, Karen, of Saukville, Janis Hibl of West Allis, and her former husband, Stewart Hibl, and Jean Vogl and her husband, Terrence, of West Bend; his cherished grandchildren, Charlotte, Joseph and Ryan Remmel, Heidi (Terrance) Gerlach, and Nathan (Ann), Brian and Darin Hibl; and dear great-grandson, Trevor Gerlach.
He is further survived by other special relatives, and many dear friends.
Elroy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernice, on Aug. 20, 2001.
A funeral service to honor the life of Elroy will be held on Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend, with Rev. Ricky Schroeder officiating.
Interment will take place in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend, on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates memorials to Divine Savior Lutheran Church, West Bend.
