Laverna B. Wilde

Laverna B. Wilde, 94, of Jackson passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2004 at the Zilber Family Hospice in Wauwatosa.

She was born on June 24, 1911 in Gibbon, Minn., to Frederick and Amanda (nee Marquardt) Grimm.

Laverna began her parochial school education in Appleton where her father was a teacher.

She continued her primary education in Lutheran schools at Burr Oak in Wisconsin, then at Immanuel in rural Lewiston, Minn. where her father was the teacher and principal.

After leaving Lewiston High School, Laverna enrolled at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. where she was a member of the traveling choir.

Laverna married Erwin A. Wilde on June 26, 1932 in Immanuel Lutheran Church near Lewiston.

Their union was blessed with three sons who all became parochial school teachers, Hilbert at New London, Merlin at New-burg and Dean at Hartford.

Laverna was a member of the St. John Choir for more than 50 years, and a member of the Ladies’ Aid and the Lutheran Women’s Society.

She faithfully cared for her family’s needs and was also an excellent seamstress and barber.

Erwin’s 50 years of teaching were matched by Laverna’s faithfulness in putting up all bulletin boards and making the large double-layered lettering for the motto of each graduating class.

Laverna also served the women’s groups with piano playing and with her typing and duplicating skills.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin, and two brothers, Arthur and Erwin Grimm.

Living immediate relatives include her sons, Hilbert (Louise) of New London, Merlin and Dean, both of Jackson; four grandchildren, Paul, John and Annette of New London, and David (Ellen) of Appleton; and a sister, Amanda Hanke of Winona, Minn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home, Jackson.

Rev. Charles Raasch of Morning Star Lutheran Church will officiate, and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m.
