Thomas J. Buckley
Thomas J. Buckley, 93, of Hartford was born to Eternal Life Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006.
He was born on April 20, 1912, in the town of Erin, the son of John and Monica (nee Toner) Buckley, and moved to Hartford when he was 7.
The Buckley familyís Hartford homestead served as the communityís first Catholic church. The current church (St. Kilianís) is just east of that original location.
Tom served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific campaign.
He married Catherine OíNeil at St. Kilianís Catholic Church in Hartford in 1954.
Tomís father was an alderman in Hartford and helped start Tomís political career.
Tom loved politics and first ran for office at the age of 42. He served for seven years as Hartfordís third ward alderman, and served as mayor for 10 years.
He was active in the VFW, American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
Tom was a barber in Hartford for 30 years.
He was the dearest uncle of Michael Buckley of Hartford, Howard (Lee) Buckley of Maine, Mary (William) Whitney of West Bend, Monica (Stephen) Spaulding of New York, Madeline (Jerry) Staehler of Waterford, Margaret (John) Roever of Slinger and John (Patricia) Buckley of Washington D.C.
He is also survived by great- nieces, great-nephews and other relatives and friends.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, in 2002; his brothers, Dr. Roland Buckley of Eau Claire and Judge Lester Buckley of Hartford, and his sisters, Letitia Buckley and Theresa Buckley of Hartford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Kilianís Catholic Church, 262 W. State St., Hartford.
Visitation will be Tuesday at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home, Hartford, from 5 to 7 p.m., with a parish vigil service at 6:15 p.m.
Interment will be in St. Kilianís Cemetery.
