Leona A. "Lee" Matenaer
Leona A. "Lee" Matenaer, 93, was a resident of West Bend for more than 60 years.
She was born on July 26, 1912 in the town of Auburn near Mauthe Lake, the eighth of nine surviving children of Peter and Mary (nee Rauen) Rinzel.
She completed elementary school in the town of Auburn and played the organ for services at St. Matthias, the local country church.
As a young women, Lee attended classes at a business school in Milwaukee and worked at a country club near Evanston, Ill.
On Nov. 9, 1940 Lee married Herbert Matenaer of West Bend. they made their first home on Monroe Street in the city. Later they lived briefly above Matenaer’s Store, until they built a home on Roosevelt Drive in West Bend.
In 1972 they moved into the Embassy Condominiums in West Bend.
They were married for more than 61 years until Herb’s death in 2002.
Leona was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church in West Bend and was active in the parish’s Rosary and Altar Society, having served as its president. She was also active in the local Girl Scouts.
Lee was an avid gardener and she found great enjoyment in playing the piano.
She and Herb both enjoyed golf and were longtime members of the West Bend Country Club where Lee was winner of various club competitions.
Leona died on Monday, Jan. 16, 2006 while a resident at Cedar Lake Home on the campus of the Cedar Community in West Bend. She had been in failing health for several months.
Survivors include her son, David of Chicago, Ill.; her daughter, Jane and her husband, Robert Heinrich of Cottleville, Mo. and by her son, Mark and his wife, Mary of Cary, Ill.
She is further survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19 at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church.
Visitation will be at the church from 6 until 8 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.
Private interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery (old) Friday morning.
