Alma Augusta Schmitt
Alma Augusta Schmitt (nee Hoepner), 96, of West Bend entered into the gates of Heaven with the arms of Jesus welcoming her on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, at Cedar Lake Health Care Center.
Alma was born on Dec. 11, 1909 in Theresa to the late Max Hoepner and Anna (nee Scheier) Hoepner. She was raised on her family homestead where she developed her lifelong work ethic. She married Adolph Scherger and resided in the town of Herman, starting a family of their own.
Adolph preceded her in death in 1942.
Alma was fortunate in finding love again with Roland Schmitt, who preceded her in death in 1969.
In 1976, love struck for a third time with Peter Schmitt. They were married until his death in 1991.
Alma enjoyed baking, canning, quilting, gardening, crocheting and traveling, especially to Germany. She will always be remembered for her delicious schaum torte, homemade bread and decorated Christmas cookies. Above all, her family came first and was the love of her life.
She was employed by Libby’s Canning Corp. for over 25 years and was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church of West Bend.
Alma will be deeply missed by her son Calvin (Donna) Scherger of West Bend; cherished grandchildren, Greg (Kathy) Scherger of Richfield, Karen (Wesley) MacFarlane of West Bend, Lori (Michael) Chapel of West Bend, Jeff (Nicole) Scherger of West Bend, Randy (Nicole) Scherger of Theresa; adored great-grandchildren, Angela (Chad) Elliott, Amanda, Kaitlyn and Gregory Scherger, Shannon and Meghan MacFarlane, Jacob Scherger, Benjamin and Matthew Chapel and (Randy and Nicole’s) blessing-to-be Scherger; treasured great-great-grandchildren, Kortni and baby girl-to-be Elliott; and dear sister, Leona Erdmann of West Bend. Further survived by many other relatives and dear friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one brother and sister-in-law, Ewald "Happy" and Linda Hoepner; one sister and brother-in-law; Ruth and Roger Kuehl; and one brother-in-law, Lloyd Erdmann.
A funeral service will be at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 462 Meadowbrook Drive, West Bend, at 6 p.m. on Friday with Rev. Joseph Fischer and Rev. David Meyer officiating.
Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hartford on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Visitation will be at the church only, from 4 p.m. until the time of service, 6 p.m. on Friday.
A special "thank you" to the staff in Cove 2, Cove 3, and Cedar Lake Hospice at Cedar Lake Health Care Center for all their care and compassion given to Alma. Also, a heartfelt "thank you" to Dr. Renee Leikness, you are truly a blessing in this community.
