Walter J. Hassinger Walter J. Hassinger, 86, of the town of Polk was welcomed through the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Autumn Oaks. Walter was born on Nov. 30, 1919, the son of Henry J. and Augusta (Werner) Hassinger, in Polk where he was also raised on the family homestead. After his schooling, he remained on the farm to work and was also a postal carrier for some time. On Sept. 11, 1943, Walter devoted his love and his life to Myrtle L. Soyk at St. John’s Church in West Bend. After marriage, the couple began a family of their own that they also raised on the family farm. Walter enjoyed spending his free time fishing, listening to polka music, dancing, farming and, above all, he loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Cedar Lake Conservation Foundation Board of Directors, and was a board member for the town. Walter was a lifelong member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, and past president of the church council. He has forever touched the lives and hearts of his beloved wife and best friend of 62 years, Myrtle Hassinger; his children, Karen (Donald) Beine of Hartford, James (Loren) Hassinger of Slinger, Ken (Debrah) Hassinger of Slinger and Jerry Hassinger of Slinger; his 12 cherished grandchildren, Christine (Scot) Schneider, Cheri (Frank) Verhunce, Amy (Nate) Janz and Tracey, Jamie, Sara, Jeffrey, Madelyn, Jason, Jacklyn, Jennifer, and Rebecca Hassinger; his two adored great-grandchildren, Troy and Matthew; his brother-in-law, Norman (Eugenia) Soyk of West Bend; and his sister-in-law, Alice Arndt of Slinger. He will also be deeply missed by other very special relatives and many dear friends. Walter was preceded in death by his parents. A funeral service to celebrate Walter’s life will be held on Sunday at 6 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 520 W. Washington St., Slinger, WI 53086, with Rev. John J. Tschudy officiating. Interment will take place on Monday at 10 a.m. at Diefenbach’s Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Sunday from 3 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 6 p.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ.
