George J. "Hansie" Handel
George J. "Hansie" Handel, 87, of Hartford passed away Sunday, July 16, 2006 at SynergyHealth St. Joseph’s Hospital in the town of Polk.
He was born Aug. 20, 1918 in Hartford to Joseph and Ella (nee Behrans) Handel, and married Dorothy Sell on March 28, 1946 in Tacoma, Wash.
George was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
George served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He retired from Libby-McNeil-Libby in Hartford were he worked for over 30 years. He had also helped out at Rhodes Greenhouse since a young man and continued into his adult life. He worked there for over 40 years.
George enjoyed working. He mowed lawns and shoveled snow for many people over the years.
George also enjoyed refinishing antique furniture and making wine.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Dorothy; three children, Michael (Linda) of West Bend, Crystal (Darnell) Burg of Hartford and Terry of Arizona; three grandchildren, Shane, Dustin and Tamara; two step-brothers, Robert Handel of Port Washington and Joseph Handel of Virginia; a stepsister, Rose Marie Matter of Cedarburg; a nephew, Tom (Jeanine) Handel of Hart-ford; and great-nephews, Tyler and Brad Handel.
He is further survived by other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Rhodes, and two brothers, Elmer and Morse Handel.
Funeral services for George will be held Friday, July 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Hartford with Rev. David Wietzke officiating.
Family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Friday from 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hartford, with graveside military rites conducted by the Hartford V.F.W. Post 8834.
