Floyd E. Olson

Floyd E. Olson of Cedarburg died Sunday, March 19, 2006 at the Samaritan Health Center. He was 88. The family is planning a private memorial at a later date.

Floyd was born Oct. 6, 1917 in Lincoln, Neb., to Frank Olson and Anna Gustafson Olson. After high school, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills during 1936-37. Savings helped pay his way through the University of Nebraska Agricultural School in Lincoln, studying forestry and conservation and graduating in 1941. Transportation was a single-speed Columbia made in 1918.

In Evanston, Ill., he received his divinity degree in the Methodist ministry at Garrett Theological Seminary and pastored several rural churches in the Dodgeville and Mineral Point area of southwest Wisconsin.

His landscaping and plant business began in a 1950 move to Cedarburg as a salesman for the McKay Nursery Company, Madison. He designed plans for many homes and businesses in Ozaukee County and surrounding areas. He was an avid Go-Hiker and biker with the Ozaukee Bikers Club.

At the age of 69, he packed his 18-speed Trek and flew to Europe for a nine-month tour to visit his motherís homeland of Sweden, which led him to the Arctic Circle, then south though the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy and to Greece, including a side trip to Japan for the Bike for Peace Ď85 Marathon to Hiroshima.

Into his 80s, Floyd was a familiar figure in Cedarburg, biking or hiking from his home five miles north to the Java House for his daily coffee and carrot muffin.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Anna, and sister Ruth. He is survived by his daughter Laura Stelly and husband Tim of Beaumont, Texas, son Paul Olson of Grafton, son Glenn Olson of Cedarburg, son Phillip Olson and wife Karen of Ashland; their mother Eleanor Olson of Marquette, Michigan; granddaughters Jennifer Stelly of Houston, Texas, Deborah Stelly of Lancaster, Pa., and Rebecca Schulz and husband Mike of Pittsburgh, Pa.
