Meta Seeberg Matthes
A private family service was held at Graceland Cemetery for Meta Seeberg Matthes, who passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, May 15, 2006 at the age of 89. The Schramka-Densow Funeral Home in Thiensville served the family.
A born educator, Meta never stopped learning, teaching and sharing. She often remarked that every day of teaching was a joy. She traveled throughout the United States and to many countries around the world, treasuring all of her experiences, friendships and memories. Meta was a lifelong supporter of the visual, cultural and performing arts. A tireless worker, she volunteered for numerous and diverse organizations. ln Metaís own words, "Iíve had a perfect life."
Meta was a graduate of the Wisconsin State Teachers College. She has been recognized for her work as a costume designer with the WPA. She began her career as an art teacher with the West Allis Public School system and later joined the faculty of Milwaukee-Downer Seminary. She continued that affiliation through mergers and name changes until her retirement from the University School of Milwaukee. Meta remained an active member of her college sorority, Pi Theta Alpha.
A resident of Mequon for more than 70 years, Meta and her sister Frieda were instrumental in establishing the Thiensville-Mequon Public Library. Meta was involved in the efforts that formed Homestead High School. She helped to found the Boy Scouts of America in Thiensville and Mequon and the local Little Theater group. Meta was a member of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thiensville and served for many years on the Landmarks Commission in Mequon, the Mequon Historical Society, the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Ozaukee County Retired Teachers Association. She also did volunteer work for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, the Milwaukee Public Museum and other organizations.
Meta was the loving and remarkable mother of Neil (Kate Hunt-) Matthes, Nancy (Greg) Bennett and Marna (Brent) Akerley. She was the cherished and devoted grandmother of Nina (Mike) Quillin, Colin Matthes, Blake Akerley, Nicholas Matthes, Lydia Akerley, Brian Bennett, Ross Bennett and Zachary Matthes. Meta was the proud great-grandmother of Cade and Peyton Quillin; and beloved aunt of Barbara Becker Agte, Robert (Char) Becker, Richard (Cher) Emde and Eric (Heidi) Emde. She is further survived by other loving relatives, many special friends and the countless others she nurtured.
Meta was preceded in death by her sisters Hildegarde (the late Woodrow) Becker and Frieda (the late Jim) Emde.
