Leslie A. Hirsig

Leslie A. Hirsig, 91, of West Bend, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006 at the Cedar Lake Health Care Center.

Leslie was born Dec. 29, 1914 in Lomira, the only child of Alfred and Anna (nee Mintner) Hirsig.

Alfred, a native of Switzerland, came to America in 1905; Anna was a native of Fond du Lac County.

Leslie made a Christian commitment at the age of 12.

All of his eight grades were in a rural school four miles southeast of Lomira and he graduated from Lomira High School in 1932.

He furthered his education through a dairy manufacturing short course in Madison in 1933 in order to wear the shoes of his father, who held a career as a cheese maker.

Leslie began work in a cheese factory in 1936 in Omro.

In 1937, Leslie married N. Mardelle Beck, a classmate of his in Lomira, in Markesan, where her father was an Evangelical minister.

In 1938, they moved closer to a cheese factory located eight miles east of Fond du Lac, where they began a loving family of their own consisting of three children: Terry Hirsig, now of Wheaton, Ill., Bonnie Falk of Menomonee Falls and Ramon Hirsig of Roseville, Calif.

Their family moved back to Lomira in 1947, when Leslie transitioned his career into the building trade, and they were active members of Trinity United Methodist Church.

It was at that time the couple became involved in short-term mission work in Appalachia, Africa, and twice in Columbia, South America.

In 1975, they moved to the Ozarks in Arkansas, where they had a spiritual rebirth and worshipped at Emmanuel Full Gospel Church.

They returned to Wisconsin in 1989, residing at Cedar Ridge, and became members of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in West Bend.

"Mardelle and I have walked with the Lord all our married life and have always depended on Him in our decision making. We also tried to be of service to our fellowmen wherever we were placed.

"I am indebted to my mate for the love we shared for 68 years; also my three children, their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; also the many friends in various places. So let it be."

A funeral service to celebrate the full life of Leslie will be held on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, West Bend, with Pastor Jean Bartlett and Rev. Wesley Falk officiating.

Interment will take place on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Salem Cemetery in Lomira.

Visitation will be held on Sunday at church only from noon. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m.

The family would like to extend their appreciation for memorials offered, in lieu of flowers, to either Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, 323 S. Fifth Ave., West Bend, WI 53095, or Trinity United Methodist Church, 300 Church St., Lomira, WI 53048.
