Ralph Elbert (Bert) Hutchison
Ralph Elbert (Bert) Hutchison went to be with our Lord on Nov. 8, 2006 after suffering a major heart attack. Bert was born in Xenia, Ohio on July 6, 1930. He was the son of Ersle and Grace Hutchison.
He went to a school in a one-room country schoolhouse for his first eight years of education, then on to Xenia High School where he was involved in many drama productions. He went to Ohio State University where he majored in pre-veterinary studies. He was able to participate in the International Farm and Youth Exchange Program where he went to Australia for a year. After returning from Australia he went to work at a radio station in Eau Claire.
He decided to begin graduate studies in Madison and went to work for the State Department of Agriculture. While working at the State Capitol Building he met and married his wife of 51 years, Nancy Lee Toepfer.
After getting married, they moved to Pittsburgh where Bert worked for KDKA Radio Station. Then he and Nancy moved to Washington D.C., where he worked for the USDA. Bert and Nancy had their first child there, Jim, and then Bert received a job offer to work for Hess & Clark in Ashland, Ohio. While living in Ashland, they had their two girls, Anne and Mary.
In 1968, Bert had the opportunity to move the family to the Hartford area. He had accepted a job with the Brady Advertising Co. and worked there until his retirement in 1992.
During the course of his life in Hartford, he was a member of the Erin School Board, The Rotary Club, the Tyme Out Program, the Hartford Historical Preservation Foundation, the Chandelier Ballroom and the Hartford Library Board. He was a member of the National Speakers Association for 40 years. He was also an active member of the St. Mary of the Hill Parish.
Bert is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, Jim (Debora) Hutchsion, Anne (Jim) Dlugopolski and Mary (Mike) Smrz; grandchildren, Bonniejean (Eric) Zitske, Kent Hutchison, Evan Hutchison, Amanda Dlugopolski, Julia Dlugopolski, Matthew Smrz and Madison Smrz; his brothers, Joe (Jan) Hutchison and Bob (Barbara) Hutchison and their children; and Vera Toepfer, his mother-in-law. Also surviving are nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
Bert is preceded in death by his mother and father, Ersle and Grace; his father-in-law, Leonard; his sister-in-law, Elaine Gernetzke; and brother-in law, Gervace Gernetzke.
Visitation was Monday, Nov. 13 at Holy Hill National Shrine of Mary Help of Christian, Main Church Level 3. A Mass of Christian Burial followed. Private Interment was at St. Augustine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Holy Hill, St. Mary of the Hill Parish or the Hartford Historic Preservation Foundation or the Tyme Out Program of Stone Bank would be appreciated.
The Hutchison family would like to thank the Staff of St. Luke’s Hospital for their excellent care. They also would like to thank all their family and friends for their thoughts and prayers. They are a big help at this time. He was a very blessed man to have known so many wonderful people. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
