Elizabeth (Betty) C. Plischounig LaBuwi
Elizabeth (Betty) C. Plischounig LaBuwi, 95, of Applegate Terrace in Wausau, formerly of West Bend and Hartford, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at Wausau Aspirus Hospital under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
She was born Dec. 19, 1911 in Milwaukee, daughter of the late Otto and Anna (Schwartzmeier) Koller. After graduating from Milwaukee Downer College in 1934, she worked as a case secretary for the Children’s Home and Aid Society in Milwaukee and later as secretary to the Washington County Agricultural Agent at the Washington County Court House in West Bend.
She married Frank Plischounig on Feb. 19, 1938 and they started Plischounig’s retail store that year.
The store changed from a paint and wallpaper store to a general department store, selling gifts, clothing, records and the first TV sets sold in the area.
She was the first woman to be a member of the West Bend Businessman’s Association.
Betty was also active in the West Bend Woman’s Club and acted in the Children’s Theater of West Bend. She and Frank retired from business in 1966.
She was predeceased by her son, William (Bill) in 1966, and by Frank in 1967.
She married Carl LaBuwi in December 1969, in Hartford. She and Carl built a home on Carl’s homestead farm in Rubicon, and her retirement years were spent in the country, feeding birds, cats, and walking her dogs. While living in Rubicon, she was a member of the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary Pink Ladies, Senior Friends, and St. Kilian’s Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers; she also was a member of St. John’s Parish of Rubicon. She and Carl wintered in McAllen, Texas, for many years. She was predeceased by him in 1987. In Wausau, Betty was a member of St. Anne’s Parish.
Survivors include Mary (Dennis) O’Flyng, Wausau; three grandchildren, Kristine O’Flyng, Wausau, Robin O’Flynn (Christopher O’Connor), Killarney, Ireland, and Kevin (Lisa) O’Flyng, Wausau; two great-grandchildren, Christopher O’Flyng and Brianna O’Flyng Halverson. Other surviving relatives include her sister-in-law, Olga (Plischounig) Schley, Kansas City, Mo., and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husbands, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Otto.
A celebration of Betty’s life was held in conjunction with a funeral Mass at St. Kilian’s Church in Hartford on Monday, April 23, 2007.
Visitation was at the church prior to the Mass.
Burial was at Holy Angels Cemetery in West Bend.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Washington County Humane Society or Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Service, Wausau.
