Cecile A. Backus, 94

Cecile Agnes Backus (nee Melius) of Hartford went peacefully to her Savior in heaven Friday, April 27, 2007 at the Aurora Medical Center in Hartford. She was 94 years old.

Cecile was born to Fred and Bertha (nee Discher) Melius on Dec. 10, 1912 in the town of Rubicon. She married Clarence Backus of the town of Wayne on Nov. 6, 1935, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hartford.

Cecile lived in the town of Rubicon until 1951 at which time they personally constructed a home and moved to the town of Hartford. In 1987 they moved to a condo in the city of Hartford.

In 1976, they established residency in Winter Haven, Fla. and resided in a retirement community for the winter months until 1999 at which time they moved permanently to their condo in Hartford.

Cecile graduated from Hartford Union High School in 1930 after which she attended business school in Milwaukee. During the Depression, she worked for Putman Oil Co. in Milwaukee.

She was an avid gardener, loved canning and for many years had a farmer's market in the town of Hartford. She also enjoyed playing cards and traveling.

She was a deeply religious woman and a member of Peace Lutheran Church and their Mission Society.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Sally (Jack) Garvens of Hubertus; son, Lane (Julie) Backus of Wilson; four grandchildren, Lisa (David) Kvistad of Middleton, Tom (Tracie) Garvens of Austin, Texas, Branden (fiancˇ Stacy) Backus of Lake Zurich, Ill., and Christopher Backus of Bothell, Wash.; four great grand-children, Jack and Sadie Kvistad of Middleton and Gabriel and Samuel Garvens of Austin, Texas.

Cecile is further survived by other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband Clar-ence in 1999.

Funeral services for Cecile will be held Tuesday, May 1 at 1 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 1001 Center St., Hartford with Rev. Aaron Steinbrenner officiating.

Family will greet relatives and friends on Tuesday at the church only from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Interment following services at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hartford.

Memorials to Peace Lutheran Church or Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School are appreciated.
