Kenneth D. Reed

Kenneth D. Reed of Hartford passed away Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at Aurora Medical Center in Hartford. He was 88 years old.

He was born on July 21, 1919 in Eldora, Iowa, to Albert and Lulu (nee Jewell) Reed. He married Anita Smith on Sept. 26, 1942 at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Scarboro, Ill.

Ken earned his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1942. He worked during the war years for Wright Aeronautical.

Ken worked for 37 years for the West Bend and Chrysler Outboard Motor Companies, retiring in 1983. He served at various times on the Hartford Planning Commission, the Hartford School Board, the Methodist Church Board of Trustees and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Anita; his children, Stephen (Karen) of LaJola, Calif., Richard (Lynn) of Colgate, Douglas (Mary) Reed of Morganton, N.C., and Joan (Stephen) Scheu of Johnson City, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren, Mark (Doreon), Scott and Robert Reed; Sherry (Robert) Sennott; Rebecca Reed; Ryan (Erika), Christopher, and Adam Reed; Andrew and Ethan Scheu; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmo (June) Reed of Green Bay; one sister-in-law, Marion Reed of Iowa City, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Lowell.

Funeral services for Ken were Sunday, July 29, 2007 at First United Methodist Church, in Hartford with Rev. Verlin Wandrey officiating. Visitation was Sunday at the church prior to the service.

Interment was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hartford on Monday, July 30, 2007.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the First United Methodist Church in Hartford are appreciated.
