John J. "Jack" McDermott
John J. "Jack" McDermott of Hartford passed away on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007 at the Virginia Highlands in Germantown surrounded by his loving family. He was 82 years old. Jack was born on June 21, 1925 in South Milwaukee to J. Thomas and Ida (nee Thomas) McDermott. He married Harriet Whipple on Dec. 21, 1943 in Michigan. Jack was a WWII veteran serving with the U.S. Navy. He retired as a lieutenant. He earned a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Western Michigan University. He was employed as a metallurgist, spectroscopist and lubrication engineer at Ladish Corp. for 20 years. Jack was a salesman for Filmite/Benz Oil for 20 years. He was also an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Church since 1965. He served at St. Timothy Episcopal Church in Wauwatosa for 25 years and eight years at Holy Trinity Church in Hot Springs Village in Arkansas. Jack resided in Oak Creek from 1962-1989. He retired to Hot Springs in 1990-2003. He most recently returned to Hartford living at the Hartford Care Center and Virginia Highlands. He was a member of St. Aidan Episcopal Church in Hartford.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Harriet, of 63 years; his children, Robert (Hanna) McDermott of Hartford, Jean (Dennis) Havey of Oak Creek, Tom (Beverly) McDermott of Oshkosh, Catherine (David) Vandermeuse of Hartford, Patrick McDermott of Hartford and Gayle (Tom) Petrilli of Richfield; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lucille McDermott. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ruth (Owen) Feldt, Nellie (Dyke) Kovak and Mae (Walter) Gilhuber; and a brother, Tom McDermott.
Funeral services for Jack were Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007 at Shimon Funeral Home in Hartford. The family greeted relatives and friends on Wednesday at the funeral home prior to the service.
Memorials to St. Adian Episcopal Church Columbarium Fund appreciated.
