David A. Sampe
David A. Sampe of West Bend, formerly of Mequon and Thiensville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007 at the age of 66. A memorial service in honor of David was held on Feb. 7 at the Schmidt and Bartelt Funeral Home in Mequon, with the Rev. Del Sailer officiating. Family greeted friends and relatives at the funeral home prior to the service.
David was born on Feb. 12, 1940 in Branch, the son of Fredrick and Enanda Sampe. On June 13, 1964, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Beaton. After attending college and serving in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam War, David and his family moved to Mequon where he started his private dental practice.
Dr. Sampe was a graduate of the Marquette University School of Dentistry and was a practicing dentist in Mequon for 34 years. He was active in local, state and national dental associations and was a past president of the Wisconsin Dental Association, from whom he earned a lifetime achievement award. Furthermore, he was a member of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, and he established the David A. Sampe Most Improved Dental Student award at Marquette University.
Dr. Sampe was active in his community with the Mequon-Thiensville Optimists and Jaycees. He was chairman of the first Mequon-Thiensville’s Fourth of July parade. One of his greatest joys was gardening and he made beautiful floral arrangements for friends and family. He also enjoyed woodworking, model trains, photography and entertaining at his home on Silver Lake.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife Mary Ellen; his loving children Pamela and David; his daughter-in-law Aliisa; and his cherished grandchildren Madison, Kieran and Sylvia. Also missing him are his siblings William (Lee Ann), Raymond, Beatrice (Carl) Ebert, Fredrick; and twin sister Dorothy (Dean) Christianson. He is further survived by many special nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Memorials to the American Cancer Society or the charity of choice would be appreciated.
The Sampe family would like to extend a very sincere thank you to Dr. Torkelson and his oncology staff, to Dr. Kevin Goniu and to the staff at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Mequon for their compassionate care of Dr. Sampe.
