Harriet Louise Melling
Harriet Louise Melling, nee Portlance, 91, died on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at Cedar Crossing, West Bend.
Harriet was born Dec. 1, 1915 in Milwaukee.
Harriet and Anton Melling were married in 1931 in Wauke-gan, Ill.
Her husband passed away Nov. 28, 1992 in Englewood, Fla.
Tony was born in Granite Rock, Redwood County, Minn., and his cremated remains were scattered in the Gulf of Mexico.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Ferdinand and Harriet (nee Connors) Portlance.
Harriet is survived by her two beloved daughters, Barbara (Dale) Landis of West Bend and Beverly (David) Palecek of Ke-nosha, and her cherished 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Harriet and Tony and their daughters were a "pioneer family" (first occupants) of Greendale, about 1940.
They bought a Dodge/Ply-mouth Agency in Woodruff, where Harriet was the business and parts manager.
The couple has owned and operated a resort in Arbor Vitae, and later in Ontario, Canada, as well as an A & W Root Beer stand between Woodruff and Minocqua.
Harriet and Tony spent winters in Englewood and summers in Ontario from the early 1950s until Tony’s death.
Many hours were spent fishing, and Harriet won many fishing contests.
Harriet had resided at Cedar Ridge in West Bend, since September 2000.
She was an avid bridge player, reader, crafter and the family genealogist.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service which will be officiated by Rev. Mike Palecek at Cedar Ridge, 113 Cedar Ridge Drive, West Bend, on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 1 p.m.
Cremation arrangements have been made with the Schramaka-Densow funeral home in Thiensville.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Cedar Community, West Bend, toward a memorial bench in Harriet’s name.
