Justine Polacek, 87 of Arpin died on Monday, July 9, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield with her family at her side, following a brief illness.
Justine was born May 21, 1920 in Arlington Heights, Ill. to Joseph and Elizabeth (Martincek) Janicek. She moved to Phillips as a child, where she attended Little Elk School. At the age of 16, she was employed at Cranberry Lake Boarding House in Phillips for two to three years.
She then moved to Chicago and worked as a nanny and housemaid. During World War II, she worked at the Pen & Pencil Factory and the Tomato Soup Company in Chicago.
She was united in marriage to Charles W. "Bud" Polacek on Feb. 16, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Phillips. Charles died on Jan. 28, 2003.
After their marriage, Justine was a homemaker for her family which included six children. She was very proud to be a mother.
Justine belonged to St. James Parish in Vesper and was active for many years at St. Francis Parish in Arpin, holding the office of treasurer for 30 years in the Parish Council of Catholic Women Society.
She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW Post # 5778 in Phillips and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post # 475 of Arpin.
She worked very hard at cooking, canning and gardening. She had huge gardens every year.
She was truly an accomplished rural mother.
She made her famous homemade bread twice weekly, which her children and their friends loved.
Justine truly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She passed on her strong faith foundation to all of her children with daily prayers, rosaries and Sunday Mass.
She is survived by four daughters, Barbara (James) Carr of Rubicon and their children, Angeline (Chris) Steiner, Shane (Kim) Carr and Amy (Steven) Muras; Pauline (John) Weis of Auburndale and their children, Jason, Jeremy and Jennifer (Jeremy) Petersen; Janice (Clifford) Altmann of Junction City and their children, Brigitta (Michael) McGreal, Allison and Alayna; Mary Soper of Rochester, Minn. and her children, Michelle (Brian) Noreen and Holly (Ryan) Conlin; one son, Gregory (Helen) Polacek of Arpin and their children, Jeremiah (Dee Ann) Polacek and Kasandra; great grandchildren, Joshua, Cyle and Aleya Scherger, Aleisha Muras, Lindsay and Madelyn Petersen, Emmett Carr, Carson Rose and Isaac Polacek.
She is further survived by one brother, John (Bernadine) Janicek, of Elmwood Park, Ill. and one sister-in-law, Mary Janicek, of Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; a son, William; a granddaughter, Katie Polacek; four brothers, Joseph, Walter and Edward and Thomas in infancy; and two sisters, MaryAnn Janicek and Carolina, in infancy.
The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12, 2007 at St. James Catholic Church in Vesper with Revs. Jude Ndugbu and Chester Osowski officiating.
Burial will be in Arpin Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as the pallbearers.
Visitation was Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Rembs/Kundinger Funeral Home and there will be visitation again on Thursday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
She is a deeply loved mother and grandmother. We love you Mother. We will always remember you Grandma.
